Montaigne was a friend to de la Botie, and a good friend to Henri IV. In 1590, Henri, then dauphin of France (second son of Charles IX and brother of Louis XIII), was largely responsible for the death of La Botie, when Henri's army murdered the Huguenots at Vassy in 1572. This was the last battle of the Huguenots, and it was the first war in which Catholics and Protestants fought together. The fact that Henri made his soldiers take refuge in the houses of the Huguenots was not only a terrible violation of a fundamental principle of French law, but a violation of the principles of friendship and humanity as well. De la Botie, more than a hundred years later, was writing his novel about the consequences of this act, and his friend Montaigne was writing his essay about friendship. The two men were completely opposed in their views of human nature.

Montaigne was not, however, the only man of his time to have written about friendship. The philosopher and poet Guillaume Postel wrote the best-selling book De la morale. To this day, Postel is more famous than Montaigne. Postel wrote about friendship, but Montaigne seems to have written about friendship first, and he is the very first writer about friendship.
