Khan is a character that one can identify with even after watching the movie. He is a man who always lives and breathes for his country. The other characters in the film (all members of the police department) are not given much depth.
After the shootout, Khan is exonerated by the police, but the country is still in a state of terror. The film ends with a comment that a person like Khan can never be lodged in jail as he is politically untouchable. He is also shown getting married to Meeta in one of the more charming sequences in recent cinema, with her standing on a car driven by the groom and his mother in the background. (The rest of the spectators are all from the police department.)
Khan's obsession with Sikh terrorism reaches its apogee in the film's final third. In one of the most creative sequences, the police is ambushed by a group of seven members, all armed with assault rifles (the number of militants is never stated). Khan completely disregards rules of engagement and unleashes a full-blown assault on the terrorists that lasts minutes. The film comes to a close with the discovery of three of the seven men, all Indian-origin. Mhatre is not made to be alive (Khan is portrayed as a ruthless and heartless man) and after one of the police officers is shot (in the leg but manages to walk away), it is revealed that he is a Sikh. After the sequence, the film returns to show Khan talking to the minister about the ramifications of the Sikh terrorism and how the same modus operandi can be used by a militant group like the Shiv Sena. What is significant about this sequence is that it highlights that the anti-Sikh terrorism campaign of the Delhi Police in which Khan participated is not only meant to wipe out the terrorists and their supporters but to repress the legitimate demands of the Sikhs.
What Aamir Khan does is far from the textbook of how to do a hero. He acts as a comic relief and is the fresh-out-of-college Anjuman, full of enthusiasm and passion and of course, his trademark bluntness. And Diya Mirza? Her Meeta is the typical quintessential Hindi heroine. She is not just beautiful, but also loves to read, she is brilliant (as seen when she gives a course in laws at college) and she has a very strong character. I liked her lack of glamour; even in her looks, this is a character, not a heroine. But the whole Meeta-anjuman team is a good one. Next comes the good casting, with Shahrukh Khan as Jaswant Singh, and Raza Murad as Anjuman, who is heard, but not seen, in a lot of the film. And Abhishek Bachchan, of course, has it all. He is believable (honest, not just brave) as an honest cop, and the scenes between him and Khan are very good. In fact, their chemistry is such that it makes it hard to believe that they have not done this before. The only thing that can be said against is the fact that apart from the fight scenes, there are not many moments of intensity. But then, this is a tale of hope and victory, and we have to give that a lot of credit. 827ec27edc
