If you want to get the serial number of the earlier date you use the serial number of the later date, minus the number of days. Remember that dates are serial numbers and if the difference between the serial numbers is 1,462 you can subtract 1,462 from the serial number of the earlier date to get the serial number of the earlier date. So here we use serial numbers to perform math on dates.
The simple example we'll look at is getting the difference between the serial numbers of two dates. This is represented by the serial number of the later date subtracted from the serial number of the earlier date.
Another example is to work out whether a date is within the specified range. This is done by comparing the serial number of the earlier date to the serial number of the later date. The serial number of the earlier date is subtracted from the serial number of the later date, and if the result is greater than or equal to zero the date is within the specified range. Otherwise it's outside the range.
This example subtracts the serial number of the later date (2007,1,1) from the serial number of the earlier date (2006,12,31) to get the number of days, in this case 1,462. So you can see that the serial numbers for the two dates are 1,462 days apart.
This document is for the purpose of understanding the DATE() function and some of its inherent quirks, showing you examples of using other functions to solve some of those quirks, and helping you understand the date serial number format.
The DATE and TIME functions work in a similar way. For example, TIME(32,5) converts the date-time serial number, TIME(5), into a time (five minutes before midnight).
The DATE function also has a TIME function and a DATETIME function. The TIME function is used to convert a date-time serial number into a time. For example, TIME(38,5) returns the time 5 minutes before midnight.
