Tournament directors must set the tone for a tournament and make sure the event is organized, runs smoothly and on time. Tournament directors are the backbone of every tournament. They are the face of DSP and help to establish the organization, the rules, the schedule, the field, transportation, parking around the venue. Tim emphasized that DSP looks for people who are willing to give 100% effort and has a set of tournament directors that consistently give it. "I've never seen an ex-Football coach run a tournament," added Tim. "I've seen a lot of ex-baseball coaches run tournaments, so I know that the reason is that the people running tournaments don't make a living at it." Tim explained, "The only difference between a folksy tournament director and a professional tournament director is that a folksy tournament director doesn't get yelled at."
Keys to important tournaments. Throughout the years DSP has run more than a few tournaments that occurred during off-season. But, what makes the difference is that when you run a tournament during off-season, the venue and field are often used by a few different tournaments. This makes it very easy to organize a tournament and the elements usually yield better and more consistent fields. DSP also has the execution of running a tournament during the same weekend or in the same season as a national tournament. The challenge then is getting the venue to be able to host multiple, competing tournaments. There are two keys for running a tournament during the same weekend or during the same season as a national tournament. First, be a part of the national tournament organization going through the preparation process. Second, make sure you budget for time and money to stock and prep the field. These are complex processes and if you are not part of the preparation rituals, you won't get to share in the time and such benefits.
Keys to running a tournament. Clearly, the most important things a tournament director has are patience, planning and organization. "I don't think there is a magic one-two-three formula that works for most people," said Tim. "The key is to find the right people. d2c66b5586
