Luther deliberately sought to produce a translation of the Scriptures which would be accessible to common people, who had insufficient learning to be able to read Latin in its original form. Indeed, Luther insisted that his translation be sufficiently simple that a layperson could understand it. In the preface to the New Testament he wrote that he aimed to translate the Scriptures into a language that all readers could understand, which meant that he did not use the Latin language but rather simplifications of it. He regarded using the vernacular as a great step forward in the development of the Reformation, because of the vast numbers who could read the Scriptures in this language.
The translation was originally published in Latin, so Luther translated the Bible into German. The complete text, including the Apocrypha, was published in 1534, but the New Testament was first published in September 1522.
Luther originally planned to begin the translation of the Bible in 1519. But this was hindered because he was imprisoned in the Wartburg Castle. As a result, it was more than a decade before Luther began translating the Bible. The first volume of the Bible was published in 1522. It was completed in September of that year and was dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. Luther used the Latin work of Peter Martyr Vermigli, as well as the Greek text of Erasmus, which had been published in 1475, and the Hebrew and Aramaic texts of Jerome, published in 1523. Luther also consulted the interpretations of the church fathers, the Vulgate, and the Syriac translation of Baruch. In addition, Luther consulted the Bible and the Greek text of Martin Dorp of Trier, published in 1516. Luther finished the final revision of the text in 1545. The first complete edition was printed in 1534.
Although Luther never published his translation of the Bible, the book was widely spread by Martin Lutherans, and significantly influenced the development of the German language, especially through the Reformation and the Bundeskirche (or the Landeskirche) in 1824. 827ec27edc
