MacOS High Sierra 10.13.1 (17B48) Compatible Utilities

I have high sierra installed on my macbook pro 13'' Early 2011 model. I have a GTX 970 graphics card. Geforce Experience says I'm running the latest driver, which is nvidia-driver-390 but if I try to activate the legacy driver I get the message 'driver not found on your system'. If I go to the drivers page to manually download the legacy driver for my card, it wants to download the nvidia-driver-390 driver instead. I cannot use the legacy driver on my macbook because it closes it self within a few moments of opening. If I try to open the app 'NVIDIA Control Panel' I get a message saying 'failed to initialize nvidia driver'. If I try to run the app 'NVIDIA Control Panel' the screen goes black and the computer restarts. I'm completely stuck. I have no idea what to do. Please help!

I am wondering whether the install of the new release from the App Store has corrupted the driver by selecting 'upgrade' for the Nvidia driver version to 390.301, but the display has not re-connected, and the reboot has not happened. I can't get to the system to fix it because I get a blank screen when I try to get to the OS, and a black and white (half-transparent) Apple logo with the spinning cog when I try to get to the App Store. I cannot even access the recovery screen. I get a repeated message of nvidia-driver-390 version 390.301 for macOS 10.13.6 but I'm stuck on the login screen. I just want to do a clean install of the new OS, but without the Nvidia drivers installed, so I can't even get to the App Store to get the ISO. I'm wondering what I should do now.

I am wondering if there's a way to try to use a different graphics driver for the graphics card. I tried to download the NvidiaGPU.kext for macOS, but when I try to use it to install the Mac App Store says it's incompatible with macOS 10.13.4.
